What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is a tool that ensures the confidentiality of the information transmitted between a server and a user.  SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a security protocol that creates an encrypted connection. Each certificate is issued for a specific domain name, containing the necessary data to identify its owner.

A website secured with an SSL certificate uses HTTPS (https://) for its Internet connection. You will notice the website is protected by the presence of a padlock icon in the address bar of your browser.

Using an SSL certificate is very good for your website's image, but also necessary from the point of view of the security of information.
